My Most Treasured Possession

Mar 29, 2010

My Dad died in 1987 at the age of just 47 of lung cancer.  It was a daughter's worst nightmare.  I lost my father, my friend,  and my hero.  Like most little girls, I adored my dad.  He wasn't perfect, but he was mine, and I loved him so.  Over the years his hero status has grown in my heart to that of SUPER hero.  Our minds want to only remember the absolute best of those who have left us, and that is very true of me.

Very soon after my dad passed away, I asked my mom if I could have his bible.  Quite honestly, I really expected the answer to be no, or that I would have to fight my brother for it.  My mom and dad were very close and had grown up in the Christian faith together.  They really had shared this bible quite a bit, as both their handwriting appears in the margins where they took notes.  But to my amazement, mom gave it to me soon after.  I couldn't believe it.  I still can't believe it.  I keep in on my nightstand bookshelf.  I am very protective of it.  As the years have passed, it continues to show signs of wear and fragility in it's tender pages and cover.  But every now and then I take it off the bookstand and ever so gently thumb through it's pages.
I love finding Dad's notes, arrows and scribbles amongst the pages.  I study to see what lessons I could continue to learn from his hand.  It takes me back to the strength of his faith, even as he faced death, witnessing to his unbelieving friends.  I remember the days of my childhood when mom and dad would attend bible study together, with this bible tucked under his arm at all times.
I've been careful to save any notes that were hidden among the pages.  His handwriting reminding me of his heart lessons, of his pursuit of Jesus.

On my parent's 25th Anniversary, they presented me with a bible just like Dad's.  I was very honored, even at that young age, as I knew the meaning of having a bible of one's own to cherish.  I'd witnessed it first hand, and was very excited to be just like Dad!  I became a margin note-taker and scripture underliner as well.
I remember Dad saying that a well worn bible is a sign of a Christian who isn't!    My bible is beginning to show those signs of wear after 25 years of study.  But honestly, I wish it looked more worn.  Because that would mean my study had been more diligent.  I have more work to do to live up to Dad's example.

My Dad's bible is one of my most precious possessions, but it is not my MOST treasured.  Have you guessed what it is?  My Most Treasured Possession?  It is the gift of salvation that my parents presented to me as a child.  It is my relationship with my Savior Jesus Christ.

Thank you Daddy, for your love and for your Christian example.  I miss you terribly!
Love,
CherBear

Gather Inspirit

"For where two or three are gathered together in My name
I am there in the midst of them."
Matthew 18:20

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up."
1 Thessalonians 5:11

I want to introduce you to a brand new website called Gather Inspirit.  Their mission statement:  "Our vision is simply to inspire, encourage and uplift all bloggers in their journey and in life. We believe that if you put the Lord first, all other things will fall in place. He will show us the way even in blogging.
Our foundational Scripture is “Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truths and teach me for you are God my savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalms 25:4-5 (NIV)"
I have the distinct honor of being a part of this fantastic group of ladies.  I met each and every one of them on Twitter!! I am not kidding!  I joined Twitter one day because there was an informational meeting happening on Twitter to learn more about a blogging conference that I was interested in going to called Relevant.  While there, I participated in conversations with some of these ladies and started following their AWESOME blogs.  It became evident very early that we all had a lot in common.  So much so that we knew God had put us together for a purpose.  My dear friend Chele asked us all to begin praying about becoming a part of this vision she had for the Gather Inspirit blog.  After thousands of emails back and forth, we launched our site just this week and we have been so excited.  The response has been incredible and we have so many ideas to encourage bloggers through this site.

I was very excited to be asked to design the logo for the site.  I will also be writing posts and helping with other behind the scenes projects.

I hope you will go visit and be encouraged.  We also have a fantastic forum that you can participate in to learn so much more about fellow bloggers just like you!

Busy Mom's Bible

Mar 25, 2010

I received this beautiful Busy Mom's Bible as a gift from Zondervan.  It is an NIV version, which is my preferred version.  It contains devotions written to the thoughts and feelings of busy moms.  When I flipped through it the first time, guess what devotion I landed on........Guilt!  Now that is a subject we all relate to!  The devotion reminds us that guilt was extinguished on the cross with Jesus.
Each devotion starts with a 1 minute devotion, followed by a 5 minute Reflect & Pray.  Then additional verses are given for 10 minutes of study time.

It has a nice concordance in the back, which is a must for me.  I thank Zondervan for this wonderful gift.

All Things New

Mar 19, 2010

These are my monkeys
I know the signs usually read "Don't Feed The Animals", but I do!!

We all know that God is a genius, buy his infinite wisdom astounds me.  Spring follows winter.  A new awakening happens in our world when spring arrives, and it is not just our earth that responds, it is US.  We suddenly feel more energetic, more engaged, we want to be outside climbing trees, we are happier, ready to spring clean: our spirits lift.

The earth begins to show signs of new life again.
Amongst the dead brown leaves and old flower stalks,
new life is emerging.  It cannot be held back.
Do you think it was a coincidence that spring and Easter go hand in hand?  God wants us to see the relevance between new life again in the spring time and the new life that only Jesus can offer.  It too, cannot be held back.  It is life giving power, power that holds the world together breath by breath:

"For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.  He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."  Colossians 1:16-17

Don't miss the incredible glory displayed here for us to see.  God created everything FOR HIM.  We are just blessed beyond measure to be able to live among his creations.  And that last section, "in him all things hold together", is one of the most powerful statements in the Bible.  Think about it, if God chooses to let go, everything on this earth falls apart.  You think gravity is a natural phenomenon?

As Easter approaches, think on these things.  Marvel in the wonderful creation that God has made, and reflect on his lessons of new life through Jesus Christ.

Praising His Splendor

Mar 18, 2010

Psalm 148
God Praised by all Creation

Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures
and all ocean depths, lightning and hail,
snow and clouds,

stormy winds that do his bidding you mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars,

wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds, kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and alll rulers on earth, young men and maidens, old men and children.

Let them praise the name of the Lord for his name alone is exalted;

his splendor is above the earth and the heavens
He has raised up for his people a King, the praise of all his saints,
of Israel, the people close to this heart.

Praise the Lord.

My Baby Grew Up

Mar 17, 2010

Back in August I sent my baby away to college. I called her about every 4 hours, you know, just to check in, like any mother would do.  It was hard letting her go, and honestly, I was a little jealous!  I had never gone away to college, and I knew she was going to have a grand adventure.  I kinda wanted to stay and just be roomies with her for all the fun!
Do you think she was ready to get rid of me at this point?  Even though, thankfully, she is only one hour away, it felt like a million miles.

She is home for Spring Break this week and we are having fun hanging out.  She loves to cook, and I love it when she does!  We had a delicious cookout last night, thanks to her culinary skill.

What is the point of this post? Nothing.  I just wanted to show off my beautiful 19 year old baby girl!

Confessions and Convictions are Brutal!

Mar 16, 2010

I am a people pleaser.  There.  I said it.

To some it may not seem like such a big deal.  After all, it's not like confessing a mortal sin, but it can be debilitating just the same.  People pleasers get caught up in making everyone around them happy, sometimes in direct contradiction to their own feelings or desires.  It is one reason that I hate and avoid conflict.  I just want everyone to be happy.  It also prevents us from being ourselves.  We try to be like chameleons that can blend into any situation.  In meeting new people, I tend to be quiet and reserved while I figure out where I fit into that particular group of people.

I was deeply convicted this morning by Paul in the book of Galatians.  He writes, "Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men?  If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ." (1:10)

Ok...anyone else challenged by that?  Re-read that last sentence very slowly.  I cannot please men and serve Christ at the same time.  Paul has never been one to pull any punches has he?  He says it like it is.  He preaches over and over again that we have been set apart and chosen by God into a special calling.  God doesn't expect us to carry out His calling all on our own.  He sent the Holy Spirit has our helper (John 14:16-17).  Too many times we try to attain our God-given calling by our own human efforts.  And when we fall into this trap, we begin trying to please men all over again.

Today my prayer is to walk in the Spirit of his calling where there is life and peace.  And when I meet you someday in real life, I'll try my best to just be myself!!

Girlfriends

Mar 11, 2010

One of the things that we love about God is that he is all about relationships.  We see great examples of Christian friendship throughout the bible: Ruth and Naomi, Elizabeth and Mary, David and Jonathan, even Jesus and John.  God desires for us to have friendships, to laugh together, cry together and have fun together.  As women, we need our girlfriends!  Here's why:
  1. Girlfriends let us whine. Isn't that so true? I don't think most men understand the great healing effect that whining has on us women, but it sure helps ease the burdens sometimes.
  2. Girlfriends take pressure off our husbands. When you think about it, we usually do consider our husbands to be one of our very best friends, but he wasn't meant to carry the load for both of you! Besides, he may want to fix whatever we are whining about (see #1), when we really may just want to vent.
  3. Girlfriends make us laugh. I don't think I have laughed as hard with anyone but some of my girlfriends. They just "get" us, don't they? And only women can relate to each other through the childbirth stories, the toddler stories, the dating stories, etc.
  4. Girlfriends ask hard questions. And we need them to! Having someone keep us accountable can help in so many areas. It helps keep us on track with God and with our family and husbands.
So if you are lucky enough to have some really good girlfriends, go out and celebrate with them and be sure to make the time it requires to nurture those friendships.

And to all my girlfriends out there.......thanks for encouraging me, loving me, and listening to me whine! Love to you all!!

Finding God's Direction

Waiting on God is hard.  I want to just tredge right through and get started.  I am not patient sometimes.

The prayers have been presented at his feet in his throne room, and now I wait.

I'm asking for YESs for two different projects that have been presented to me.

Would you ask God for a YES answer for me?  He listens to his saints.

In all things, to God be the Glory.

Do you ever see God through your Children?

Mar 10, 2010

Do you ever see God through your children?  It is a humbling and astounding thing to be reminded of  amazing attributes of God just by watching your children do what comes naturally to them:

my children love me unconditionally
"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands." Deuteronomy 7:9

my children run to greet me when I walk into a room
Jesus is always waiting to greet me when I enter his throne room

my children love to spend time with me
"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." John 14:3

my children easily forgive me
.."as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."  Psalm 103:12

my children watch my every move
"The Lord will keep you from all harm-he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore."  Psalm 121:7-8

"From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth--he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do."  Psalm 33:14-15

Thank you, Lord for these three beautiful girls you have entrusted to my care for just a little while.
Thank you for the lessons they teach me about You.

Would you share the lessons you have learned from your children?

Thank you for the Encouragement!

I must thank you all for your words of encouragement. They meant all the difference, and as always, it is nice to know we are not alone in this crazy world.  I savored every word over the weekend, as I pondered and prayed about this crazy blogging thing we do.

The biggest thing I learned?  Let go and let God.  He'll make this blog what he wants it to be if I give it up to him.  My exploration of what this blog should be inspired this graphic art:

And that is what this life is all about...
..Honoring My King Jesus.

Since you  inspired and encouraged me to just "be me", I have decided to stop worrying about this pinpoint focus that has been bothering me for the last couple weeks.  I will blog what is on my heart and the many things that I love about life:  Jesus, my family, my dogs, scrapbooking, stamping, gardening, beading, graphic design, photography and who knows what else!  I hope you will join me for the ride.

Blogging is Hard

Mar 5, 2010

For the last two weeks I have been spending countless hours on my computer trying to get more readers to my blog.  I've tweeted, I've commented, I've facebooked, and I've emailed.  I am exhausted.  I had no idea that blogging was so much work!

I am trying to learn as I go as well.  There is so much information out there about what works and what doesn't work, how to connect with your readers, how to keep your readers, how to write better, what plug-ins do I need...so much stuff!  My head is swimming in information.

And if I am completely honest, I am a little discouraged.  Through all the hours spent building connections and relationships, I am not sure I have gotten anywhere.  I may be feeling sorry for myself, but I don't feel others are reciprocating.  Sometimes I feel invisible.  I tweet, no one tweets back.  I email, they don't email back.  I ask questions, no one responds.  It may be gut-wrenchingly honest, but it kinda hurts my feelings.

I guess this is my Friday Fail.  I'm feeling vulnerable and insecure.  I'm praying about where God wants to take this blog...I'll be praying all weekend.

And in the midst of working so hard on blogging, my house looks like this:

When you started your blog was it this hard?  Did you get discouraged?

Scripture Challenge - Follow

Mar 4, 2010

Patter over at Triple the Scraps offered up the word "Follow" on her Scripture Challenge this week.  I chose the verse John 8:12: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."  I find great comfort in the words "never walk in darkness".  Light gives life.  Christ is light and life.  What more can I hope or ask of my Savior?

For anyone who is still looking for a stand for your 6x6 pages, my husband and I have made a few and I have them listed in my Etsy shop here.

Hearing God Speak

Not long ago I was in a desperate state.  I was in a period of serious self-doubt about everything in my life, especially my identity in Christ and my job as a mom.  As we talked about yesterday, Satan was really hammering away at me, and he was winning by a landslide.

I stumbled across this book several years ago at a Mom's conference, Hearts at Home, and have poured through it ever since.  His Princess, Love Letters from Your King by Sheri Rose Shepherd was medicine to my aching soul.  She writes beautifully in the person of God in the form of love letters addressed personally to you.  The letters are based on scripture of course, but the way they are written as if spoken directly to me from God is sincerely heartwarming and therapeutic.  Here is just a sample from the letter entitled:

My Princes Be My Light to the World Today
I stepped into your darkness so you would shine for Me.  Did you know that I have empowered you to light up the lives of everyone around you?  You are My light to the world.  So walk with Me, and let me illumine your life today with My love and My power.  Look to Me, and I will make you the bright spot in someone's darkness today.  Don't hide your light beneath your uncertainties and insecurities.  Spent more time with Me and I will make you glow with the godliness that's irresistible.  If you will let Me, I'll make you shine in such a way that you will be My star that points to heaven and brings hope to the hurting.
Love, Your King and True Light of the world

Oh I just love that!  It is so uplifting and encouraging and hopeful.  It is based on Matthew 5:14-15, which you probably recognize as the basis for the children's song "..hide it under a bushel, no, I'm gonna let it shine!"

I wanted to share this book with you because I absolutely love it.  I have given a copy to my three girls as well.  I think it really helps them to gain a greater understanding of their place in God's heart.  Every young woman needs to know they are God's Princess, whom He adores and treasures.

From time to time I'll be reviewing a book I love that has helped me in my walk with Christ.  I hope you enjoy the books and the reviews!

Are you ready for battle?

Mar 2, 2010

Ephesians 6:11-17

Life on this earth is a battlefield.  And the warfare is ugly.  The enemy uses unspeakable weapons, and the attacks come from all directions.  Are you wearing your armor?

Ephesians 6:11 starts with "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes."  This is a directive that requires the believer to take action. The word "stand" is used 3 times in these first 4 verses. We are encouraged and directed to stand against Satan.  Not to give in, but to stand firm, stand against, stand our ground against him.

Paul reminds us in Ephesians that God doesn't send us into battle without the proper equipment to win against Satan.  He has already provided us the way to victory.

Belt of truth:  The belt would keep all of the armor in place.  This is the Word of God.
The Breastplate of Righteousness: The breastplate's purpose is to protect the vital organs-the heart.  The breastplate of righteousness protects your heart against Satan's schemes, corruption and injustice.
Feet prepared with the Gospel of Peace: Strong and ready, sharing the good news of peace with God.
Shield of faith: The shield defects the enemy's arrows and provides extra protection to the rest of the armor.  This is our protection against temptation and distraction thrown at us by Satan.
Helmet of Salvation: The helmet guards our minds.  It provides the ultimate victory over the forces of evil.  Sword of the Spirit: The sword provides as both offensive(the only one mentioned) and defensive weapon. The sword can defeat the enemy's plan and rescue lives.  The Sword is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Satan is dedicated to:
1.  Destroying the believers confidence in God
2.  Seducing the believer thru deceptive teaching or their own sin to believe a lie
3.  Preventing unbelievers from hearing a clear message about the gospel

He is called by over 40 different names throughout the Bible.  See him for what he is.  Make no mistake about his mission....

Accuser -“Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.’” Revelation 12:10

Adversary -“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

Deceiver-  “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” Revelation 12:9

Devil - “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8

Dragon - “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” Revelation 12:9

Enemy - “The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.” Matthew 13:39

Evil one - “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.” John 17:15

Father of lies - “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” John 8:44

...just to name a few.

And do you know when he hits you the hardest?  When you are impacting others for the Kingdom of God.  When you are stepping out in faith, maybe for the first time.  When those you love are suffering.

RUN, run into the arms of Jesus for his protection, guidance, and love.

"...be alert, and always keep on praying..."

Are you ready?

Where is your armor?

The Relevant Conference and Twitter

Mar 1, 2010

I am very excited about two awesome things I have discovered:  The Relevant Conference and Twitter!

The Relevant Conference is a place to connect kindred hearts; to enjoy sweet and fruitful fellowship; to engage one another in sharing, inspiring, and learning, and to figure out how to integrate our lives fully with our faith and family…all the while glorifying Him amidst this blogging tidal wave.  Doesn't that sound awesome?

The conference is in October in Pennsylvania and I REALLY want to be there!  Why?  For some reason I have yet to fully identify, I am really into this blogging thing!
~I love sharing with others what life is like here with my family and also some things I have learned along the way that may be able to help others
~I love the community that blogging creates
~I love getting to know people from all over the country
~I love seeing into the lives of other Christian women and knowing I am not alone in this crazy world!
~I love seeing how others handle difficulty and joy
~I love and respect those who have the gift of leadership and teaching and are willing to share it with others
~I love seeing the creativity that flows through all of us come out in so many different ways
~I love seeing the uniqueness that God has created in all of us
~I love that so many women are willing to share their hearts with complete strangers like me
~I love that most moms are crazy about their kids and will take photos of them doing EVERYTHING
~I love that they make me think
~I love that they make me laugh
~I love that they make me cry
~I love that they make me examine my walk with my Lord
~I love that they are opening up their lives to Glorify God through blogging

So what does Twitter have to do with this?  I admit it, I was a Twitter Snob for a long time.  I just didn't get it!  Call me a slow learner, but look what I have discovered in just one week on Twitter!
~Over 80 crazy people are following me!  Go figure....and I don't even say that much, I mostly listen
~Those amazing women who are blogging about their lives are also on Twitter
~You can win all kinds of stuff on Twitter

But best of all, I have met some of these incredible women:

Myra @ My Blessed Life  She is a great encourager!
Erin @ Home With The Boys She is REAL and I love that.
TeriLynne @ Pleasing to You She is really funny and I love every one of her Tweets
Kristi @ KristiStephens.com She has a huge heart for the Lord and she is a fellow book lover
Alicia @ Making Time for Mommy She is a great Mom deep in the throws of toddlerdum!
Sarah Mae @ Like A Warm Cup of Coffee An awesome woman after God's heart and founder of Relevant
Tamara @ The Unexperienced Mom She is a wealth of knowledge and a fantastic writer
Brooke @ A Life in Need of Change She is transparent and sweet and willing to share anything with us
Lisa Jo @ The Gypsy Mama She has been all over the world and shares great insight-also very funny

I could probably list 10 more, but I think you see what I mean!  And they are all going to be at Relevant! I want to learn from them, get to know them,  study with them, laugh with them, and worship with them.

I'm still a newbie at this blogging thing, and I have a lot to learn.  But I know one thing, I want to be involved in Glorifying God through blogging.  Will you join me?
