Praying for our Children and Husbands

Feb 25, 2010

Happy Dance!  After a very long time (longer than I would like to admit), I finally spent the day creating my own Prayer Journal.   This link will take you to a download site and you can print it for your own use.   In the future, you'll be able to find it under the new page, Daily Prayers for Children.

I didn't want a dated calendar because I want to be able to use it EVERY month.  So I made a simple table with 1-31 for days of the month and added daily prayers for my kids and my husband.  I added a third column for "others", but left some blank so you could add your own.

I hope you'll check it out and let me know what you think.

Aaron Prayers

Feb 24, 2010

I have to be honest, I have never heard of Aaron Prayers.  I've been reading a couple different books on prayer and happened across this in my reading yesterday.  The idea comes from a passage of scripture found in Numbers 6:24-26 when God promises Aaron and his sons that when they prayed for Israel, he would listen to them.  This was their prayer of blessing for Israel.

The passage is very familiar, as it is often used as a doxology in many churches.  I'm sure you have heard it before.

24‘May the Lord bless you and protect you.

25May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.

26May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’

It looks like a simple enough prayer, but look at what is packed in between the lines that we can be praying for others:
24‘May the Lord bless you and protect you.
protection from spiritual danger, physical danger, illness, temptation, and other difficulties

25May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.
show His kindness by actively blessing with needed-food, clothing, shelter, spiritual wisdom and strength, healthy families and relationships

26May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’
Pray that your friends will find peace. For your unsaved friends, ask that God will show them His salvation so they can be at peace with Him. And for fellow believers, pray that God will protect them from spiritual discouragement and help them to grow in their knowledge of Him.

I love having a solid structure and scripture to pray for my friends and family.  I'll admit, sometimes I don't know how to pray for them.  Even more, I will be incorporating this into the prayers I say for my children and husband.

What are some of your favorite scriptures to pray?

There Will Be A Day
Jeremy Camp

I try to hold on to this world with everything I have
But I feel the weight of what it brings, and the hurt that tries to grab
The many trials that seem to never end, His word declares this truth,
that we will enter in this rest with wonders anew

But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering

(Chorus)
There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more
fears (Revelation 21:4)
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more,
we'll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we'll hold on to you always

I know the journey seems so long
You feel you’re walking on your own
But there has never been a step
Where you’ve walked out all alone

Troubled soul don’t lose your heart
Cause joy and peace he brings
And the beauty that’s in store
Outweighs the hurt of life’s sting

But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering

(Chorus)

I can’t wait until that day where the very one I’ve lived for always will
wipe away the sorrow that I’ve faced
To touch the scars that rescued me from a life of shame and misery
this is why this is why I sing

There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more
fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more,
we'll see Jesus face to face

There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more
fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more,
we'll see Jesus face to face

There will be a day, he will wipe away the tears,
He will wipe away the tears,
He will wipe away the tears,
There will be a day.

The Girl Creative

I saw this very cute project over at Triple the Scraps and thought I should try it since I had the supplies I would need.  I used pages from an old hymnal.  I always keep my eye out for these at library books sales to use just for projects like this.  I used Distress Inks to color the pages so they matched my kitchen. I covered a little cardboard box with scrapbook paper from my stash and added a little ribbon. I used the remains of the hymnal pages as stuffing down inside the box.

Aren't they cute?  So easy and fun!

Scripture Challenge

Feb 19, 2010

The word for this week's Scripture Challenge through Triple the Scraps is "Home".  After reading many of the scripture containing that word, I always came back to the eternal hope found in John 14:2, that Jesus is away preparing a place for us in his Heavenly Home.  It just doesn't get any better than that!!  Eternity in heaven with my Savior.

So here is my page.  I used my new Make the Cut software with the Cricut to cut the house shape from some paper by We R Memorykeepers.  I added some Stickles to the centers of the flowers.  I found this key charm in my stash to add a touch of whimsy.

Communication

Feb 18, 2010

I just had a lovely conversation with my 9 year old, K.  Sometimes I have to stop everything and just talk.  (not always good at the stop everything part!) She has always been a horrible sleeper, and I mean since she was a baby, and this week has been no exception. It has really caught up with her.  Most of you are moms or parents, so you know what I mean, it has been ugly.  And I do mean U.G.L.Y.

So as she was having a meltdown in her room before bed, I just took her in my arms and started goofing off with her.  She was very receptive to that and I got enough smiles to calm her down so we could talk.

Her self-esteem has taken a hit lately with some friends at school.  She is questioning herself, and I know she feels scared. She has also been taking it out on her 8 year old sister.   I reassured her with God's word and who she is in Christ.  It amazes me that I am talking to my 9 year old about her sinful nature and her Christ-likeness.   It boggles my mind.  I didn't have a conversation about that until I was in my 20s!

After talking with some other parents lately, I have realized that not everyone is comfortable talking about these kinds of issues with their kids.  But can I encourage you?

If we want our kids to talk to us when they are teenagers, we have to talk to them NOW!!  An open line of communication and a trust relationship must be established early with our kids.  Don't get me wrong, I've messed up in this area plenty.  But I am trying to do better.  I don't always make myself available to talk.

How about you?  What kind of communication do you have at home?  Have you tried anything you'd like to share with us?

Comment problems

Oh how I have missed your comments!  I was trying out a new system that would allow me to reply to your comments, so we could be more conversational.  Unfortunately, it was cutting off ALL comments!  I've had problems with it all week.  I have removed that program and will continue to look for something else that lets me banter with you on the comments section.

Anyway, if you have tried to leave a comment in the last few days, come on back and try it again!

Wednesday Worship

Feb 17, 2010

This song came on the radio as I was doing errands yesterday.  It reminded me again about the importance of praying for our children and families.  But the biggest impression I was left with was exactly the lyrics to this song.  Prayer isn't instantaneous results.  Sometimes it take years of praying for the Almighty to say "yes".  I love that this song reminds us that waiting should be active.  We don't stop worshiping.  We don't stop serving.  We press on as we wait on the Lord's answers.  Enjoy the song.

While I'm Waiting
John Waller

I’m waiting
I’m waiting on You, Lord
And I am hopeful
I’m waiting on You, Lord
Though it is painful
But patiently, I will wait

I will move ahead, bold and confident
Taking every step in obedience

While I’m waiting
I will serve You
While I’m waiting
I will worship
While I’m waiting
I will not faint
I’ll be running the race
Even while I wait

I’m waiting
I’m waiting on You, Lord
And I am peaceful
I’m waiting on You, Lord
Though it’s not easy
But faithfully, I will wait
Yes, I will wait

I will serve You while I’m waiting
I will worship while I’m waiting
I will serve You while I’m waiting
I will worship while I’m waiting
I will serve You while I’m waiting
I will worship while I’m waiting on You, Lord

Praying for My Children and a Giveaway

Feb 16, 2010

I've felt very convicted lately that I need to be praying more passionately for my children.  I've been reminded by several blogs and articles I have read that witness to the power of prayer for our kids, not just in the "here and now", but years of praying for their education, God's will for their life, Godly, lifelong friendships, and their future spouses.  Prayers that shape who they are, their character and their relationship with their Savior.  It is a mighty task, one that I MUST tackle.

I love the Power of Praying series by Stormie Omartian.  The one that I am pouring through right now is the Power of a Praying Parent Book of Prayers.  It has many prayers by category for such things like Staying Attracted to Purity, Instilling the Desire to Learn, Following Truth and Rejecting Lies, Being the Person God Created.  It has so many wonderful topics to pray for our children.  I just love this little book.  And it is a perfect size to just throw in your purse and be able to pull out at a stoplight or while waiting for kids at the bus stop!

I am also in the middle of the book, Every Child Needs a Praying Mom, by Fern Nichols, the Founder of Moms In Touch, International.  I can't seem to read this book fast enough!

She has just fabulous insights on prayer, and I love how she breaks down great ways to pray through the ACTS formula, giving very practical and easy ideas on how to implement Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication.

It was very challenging to read the following: "How often are you coming into God's presence? The privilege, the power, the authority is yours. God wants you to take your children into the Holy of Holies. Are you taking your children in, claiming the Word of God for them? Are you taking in your husband.....your mother....your unsaved friends...?"  WOW!

You'll be seeing more about praying for your children here, as I continue to do better at this myself.  I hope it will help keep me accountable.  Would you like to join me?

I'd like to give away a copy of The Power of a Praying Parent by Stormie Omartian.  To enter, leave me a comment and let me know what your favorite resource is for praying for your children.  I'll choose a winner on Monday, February 22nd.

I'm linking to A Life in Need of Change today.  She has commited to pray for her children every day this entire year.  Go check out how she is praying.

Scripture Challenge - Abide

Feb 10, 2010

I found it interesting that in my NIV bible, the word for this week, abide- NEVER appears. It is like that word went extinct! I had to find my King James version to find some selections. I chose John 12:46 because of the reference to Christ being our light. As one who feels darkness through depression, the scriptures that remind us of the light of Christ always offers great encouragement.

My husband and I are making more of the 6x6 stands, so if you are interested in buying one for only $5, leave me a comment and we'll hook up!

I'm linking to Triple the Scraps today for the Scripture Challenge.

I'm forgiven because You were forsaken
I'm accepted, You were condemned
I'm alive and well, Your Spirit is within me
Because You died and rose again

I'm forgiven because You were forsaken
I'm accepted, You were condemned
I'm alive and well, Your Spirit is within me
Because You died and rose again

Amazing love, how can it be
That You, my King, should die for me?
Amazing love and I know it's true
And it's my joy to honor You, in all I do to honor You

I'm forgiven because You were forsaken
I'm accepted, You were condemned
I'm alive and well, Your Spirit is within me
Because You died and rose again

Amazing love, how can it be
That You, my King, should die for me?
Amazing love and I know it's true
And it's my joy to honor You, in all I do to honor You
In all I do to honor You

You are my King
You are my King
Jesus, You are my King
You are my King

Amazing love, how can it be
That You, my King, should die for me?
Amazing love and I know it's true
And it's my joy to honor You

Amazing love, how can it be
That You, my King, should die for me?
Amazing love and I know it's true
And it's my joy to honor You, in all I do to honor You
In all I do to honor You, in all I do, let me honor You

S.A.D.

Feb 8, 2010

Up until 1995, I was pretty normal.(I think) In the spring of 1995, my then husband dropped a bombshell on me. He wasn't in love with me anymore, and yes he was seeing someone else. The months that followed were the darkest, most difficult days of my life. My clinical depression was so bad that at times, I forgot to feed my 4 year old. I stayed with my brother's family for awhile, until some meds could get me up off the floor. I have struggled with depression ever since.

I have been on meds now for going on two years after my last bad bout with a round of depression. It helps keep my moods from swinging so severally. But even now, while on meds, I still have the winter blues. I live in Illinois, and the sun rarely makes appearances during the winter months. Even today it is just gray and gloomy. It sends me back to bed.....lots.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression or winter blues, is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter or, less frequently, in the summer, spring or autumn, repeatedly, year after year. SAD is not a unique mood disorder, but is "a specifier of major depression".

The US National Library of Medicine notes that "some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and crave sweets and starchy foods. They may also feel depressed. Though symptoms can be severe, they usually clear up." (from Wikipedia)

I hate wasting so much time sleeping, but some days there is just no motivation to do anything else. I had been beating myself up about it, when my husband said, "Well if that is your only symptom of depression right now, we can live with that." What sweet relief that simple statement had for me. I'm sure he had no idea the grace that was laced through those few words. It allowed me to just relax about the whole thing. I am still trying to limit my sleep, but some days I just can't fight it off.

The interesting flip side to this is that during the spring and summer, my husband frequently has to ask me to sit down! I am on the go from morning until night. I am outside as much as possible, long after my family has abandoned me for reasons like, heat, bugs, boredom, etc. My hubs has to call me in some nights! I love my garden, my dogs, my gazebo, the summer air, and the sweet summer sounds. The differences in my personality are night and day. It is hard to reconcile within myself.

How about you? Do you feel the winter blues? Does someone you love? I'd love to hear how you combat those long days of winter. (yes I have a sun lamp!) But most of all, if you have a dear one who struggles through the winter, offer them grace. It is the best gift you can give. We are already hard enough on ourselves!!

New Endeavors

I've been working hard on some new items to add to my Etsy shop.  Trying to find some new ways to make a little extra money for the family!  I've missed a few posts this week!

I saw a book at the library recently about making jewelry from your toolbox.  It had so many cute ideas that I just had to try it!  And this is what I came up with.  They are ordinary washers that I have colored with alcohol inks and glaze.  Then put together into a lovely piece of jewelry!  I've had so much fun creating and I keep coming up with more ideas to produce.  I hope you'll check out my Etsy shop to see what else I have come up with.  Can you leave me  a comment and let you know what you think?  Is it something you would wear?  I sure get lots of compliments when I wear my own!

Wednesday Worship

Feb 3, 2010

After a long week last week (see this post), I have been studying scriptures that remind me of who I am in Christ, so I thought this song was very timely.

IN CHRIST
by Big Daddy Weave
Well I may not be the greatest man to walk this earth
But I know who is
And I may not amount to what you think is much
But I already do to Him
While people keep searching for answers
Looking for a light in the dark
I'm standing with the answer
Cause He is living in my heart

In Christ I can do all things
In Christ I mount up on eagle's wings
In Christ I wait for a great reward
That I have in store
In Christ I have His righteousness
In Christ I have what I confess
In Christ I don't worry about all the rest
Cause everything I need to be is in Christ

Well you might think that I'm sounding all too prideful
But let me tell you something true
The very one who lives inside of me right now
Wants to live inside of you
Instead of searching any longer
You can have peace today
You can take hold of the answer
Then you'll be able to say

In Him we live and move
And in Him we have our being
As we all live in Him
Together we can sing
